Summer Stroll shows a couple taking a walk along a hilltop that overlooks a man made lake on the otherside. Powerlines are abundant in Japan and from the distance shot, it was difficult to remove them, however, I though in this case they contributed nicely to the photo. I also gave the photo a slight tint to offset the powerful overcast of the sky.

It was very windy when this shot was taken. I liked the contrast of the lanterns against the temple in the background. I also liked the angles of the lanterns which provides for a more unique shot.

Long Windy Roads Japan

Long Windy Roads Japan are very common in Japan. This is a short video showing what the roads are like on a trip up into the Nagano mountains. The countryside is very green with houses that can be seen in the distant. The roads are narrow with places on the side for cars that need to pull over. There are also large stone structures on the side of the road to keep avalanches at bay which are very common in Japan during the rainy season.

Summer Twilight Japan

Summer Twilight was extremely fun to shoot. There is a lot happening here and thus the challenge of composition was huge. The selective focusing combined with the background colors and contrast of the leaves made this shot very rewarding for me. I can gaze at this photo for quite a while which for me is what makes photography fun.

Temples of Zenkoji in Nagano Japan

Zenkoji in Nagano City has some pretty cool temples and shrines to visit. This is one of them that I like very much. This video was taken in the middle of the Obon holiday this week and so you’ll see the orange and white lanterns hanging about. It was a gorgeous day and the colors came out well I thought. The Video was taken with my pocket HD camera called the Creative Vado HD. You can hear the sounds of the Cicadas in the background which are abundant during the August Summer season. Loud Cicadas in Japan

A Cicada in Japan is an insect with large eyes wide apart on the head and usually transparent, well-veined wings. Cicadas live in temperate to tropical climates where they are among the most widely recognized of all insects, mainly due to their large size and remarkable acoustic talents.

This video shows how loud Cicadas can get in Japan. The video starts out with some very loud ringing sounds which later quiet down because the Cicadas are sensing someone in the area. The Cicadas usually reside high up in the trees and are visibly difficult to spot.

When you something approaches their area of comfort, they begin to quiet down. Cicadas usually arrive in late July and last all through August, dying off in early September. They can be very annoying if you focus on them. When ignored, they are generally go unnoticed despite the noise. This video was shot using a Creative Vado HD. http://jimatwood.net

Self Distortion

Discovered this interesting mirror out in the shrubs and decided to take a quick self portrait. The mirror distorts me a bit, but perhaps in a good way?…laugh. I look a tad more slim than usual. Will need to revisit this mirror when/if I get bigger. Note I am wearing these cool new shades from Uniqlo Japan that actually allow me to see through the camera viewfinder without any light problems. It’s nice not to have to squint or stress my eyes on bright, hot sunny days.
